I have known Matt (or “2 Pint Matt” as he can’t drink for shit) for a good few years and it’s just so good to know that there are people like Matt actively involved in the UK snowboard retail world. The customer is the king with the Absolute boys but it’s their attention to detail that makes the difference. They even do their own tech videos to give the customer all the info that they’d ever need.
– Scott Todd, Rome UK
Ok, basics first. What’s your name and where’s your shop?
Hey I’m Matt and I work for Absolute-Snow in Hemel Hempstead, Herts, Just north of London…
What’s your home mountain?
The Snow Centre, Hemel (A UK Fridge), but I mostly ride the Tyrol during the season…
So what’s the set up for the season?
Rome Libertines, Rome Targa Bindings and Rome Mod.
How long have you been working in the shop?
Sheeet, five years now…
How’d you get the job?
During the unemployed bum stage of my life – just after my last season in Wanaka – I happened to get a phone call asking if I wanted some casual work moving some boxes around for a few weeks while Absolute move into their new warehouse. Next thing you know, it’s five years later….
What makes your shop stand out?
The shop itself is quite small, so our customers get super personal service from snowboarders who have actually ridden all of the products we are stocking for the new season, rather than just being told to sell a product because they have the highest margins and best reward for the salesman. Online, we do a video review each time we test a product, so if you don’t want to leave your arm chair and come down and chat to us, you can still see what we thought of the new equipment and make your own mind up.
What’s the craziest thing a customer’s asked for?
Not quite what he asked for, more what he did. A dude got a black taxi from central London the other day (probably cost him around £150.00) to come and pick up a balaclava. The next day, 2 guys were arrested in central London for a robbery of some high-brow jewelers… coincidence?
Favourite Rome product and why?
Rome Targa’s fo show! I love that locked in feeling they deliver, aswell as them being the most comfortable bindings I have ever owned..….. plus they never break so they save me a massive headache at the shop!
What’s your spirit animal?
I have no idea what this is…. But I have a soft spot for a cheeky little basset hound every now and then… does that count?
Tell us a joke?
My girlfriend bought a cook book the other day called ‘cheap and easy vegetarian cooking’. Which is perfect for her, as not only is she vegetarian…..
Any local riders that you or the shop in general are especially stoked on?
Jake Terry killing it at the moment… http://jaketerry.co.uk
You’re stuck on a chairlift for 8 hours, who are the 3 people you’d like to be stuck with?
I’m thinking practical here:
Papworth: Always well equipped to spend long periods of time sitting down
Amy: Hilariously entertaining in an emergency
Nic: Incredibly powerful buns incase the situation took a turn for the worse
Best pick up line?
‘What does this face get me?’
If you could do only one trick the rest of your life, what would it be?
Face shot, face shot, face shot, pillow, pillow, pillow, face shot, face shot, face shot.
Pow lines or park laps?
Pow Lines & backcountry kicker sessions
Best shred flick of the season?
What one thing would you change about snowboarding to make it better?
More free cash to seasonairs.
Describe the perfect day of riding.
Cold, crisp morning with a ton of fresh, followed by a warm, Horsefeathers park session in the afternoon… all with a cheeky bottle of Stroh 80 and some amazing friends
Any shout outs?
The dudes who have been there at strictly the best days riding over the last few years: Flesh, Marsh, Rich, Simpson, Little Rob and Cattle Face… You guys rock! Plus Rome UK, Amplid, Noble custom & Ultrasport.
Any last words?
Check out the Red Bull Stratos project… it’s been blowing my mind! http://www.redbullstratos.com/
