Session 6 at Windells: Jib-Jams and Wonka Style Trickery
Aug 11, 2010 - 10:23 AM EDT

It’s hard to believe that it’s already August; it seems like only a few days ago it was June 6th and Windells was starting summer off amidst pow days and freezing temps, and now it’s warm, sunny and Session 6 just finished up. Luckily, there’s still tons of snow up on the hill so there’s been no shortage of shreddogging at Mount Hood.
Up on hill, the Windells Diggers had set up a flat box next to where everyone hangs out for water breaks and the local Rome crew held a jib jam. Campers of all ability levels were able to hit the box, some learning boardslides for the first time, others perfecting solid frontboards and 270s on and off. Northwest regional rider, Derrek Lever and Quebec rider, Francis Jobin hung out and hit the box with the campers. Watch out for both of these guys in the future. Derrek has been coming up at Stevens Pass in Washington the last few seasons, while Francis is not even in high school yet and already has really fluid style.
More than half of camp showed up for Rome Stacher Night. AmArmy rider Jeff Rudinksi and crew ‘stached up everyone pretty quickly, because by this time of summer, the game show host taggers are keen to many of the good hiding spots around camp. But, every session, some campers seem to find new and creative spots that no one has thought of before and evade the hosts. Round 2, the talent competition is the best addition to Rome sponsor night by far. This week was a good show. One camper stood up in front of everyone and said, “My talent is that I get all the girls.” He smiled and with that, 30 female campers and a couple of staff members all flocked around him. Not sure what was so alluring about him, he was either spinning double-corks in the park all day or maybe he just threw on an extra splash of Curve cologne before Rome night, either way, he slayed the ladies. The eventual winner of Stacher Night, a camper named Pat, had proved himself the day before by winning an eating competition by a landslide. He excelled in both his strategy of avoiding getting ‘stached, as well as showcasing a talent to impress the judges and crowd. Pat was hobbling around in a knee brace and crutches and announced that for his talent he would run up to a tree and backflip off of it. The crowd of onlookers was aghast, until Pat threw down the crutches, ripped off the knee brace and sprinted to the nearest tree, running up the trunk Jackie Chan-style and flipping off of it. He had been faking the injury the whole time. His display earned him a brand new 2011 Rome Artifact and some well deserved high fives.
Next session is the finale of the summer, stay tuned to www.romesnowboards.com for photos, video and news about the end of summer at Mount Hood!
