Marie Hucal: iChat Interview with TM John Cavan

Jul 29, 2010 - 03:29 PM EDT

Marie Hucal is one bad ass snowboarder, she’s the newest addition to the Rome team and she’s quickly made a name for herself as a charger who’s not afraid of rails, jumps, or filming with dudes. Sharing the same name as another certain female snowboarder on the Rome team has earned Marie a handful of nicknames but it’s clear that she’s her own person and won’t be living in the shadows of anyone. After MFR got injured this winter Marie Hucal got the call to come out to Bear and film with us for Team Shoot Out, a daunting task for anyone, but especially someone who really hasn’t filmed with any of us before. Marie is funny, quick witted and has a positive personality, which makes her an easy fit to our team. I look forward to working a lot with her in the future…even if she is kind of a hippy…I mean flaming spinning yo-yos…who does that? Here’s a little iChat interview I did with her recently.

John Cavan - ok lady you ready to do this

Marie Hucal - sure thing!

JC - ok so what kind of weird hippy shit have you been up to lately?
MH - haha, I try not to think of it like that, but I found so many fun things to keep me occupied this summer... spinning fire poi, learning a travel-size banjo, rock skipping, making some music with friends and my sister, yoga classes and sail boating! everyday has been so fun!
JC - exactly I rest my case…spinning fire polls and you don’t think you are a hippy
MH - I don’t really know what exactly the definition of hippie is, but its an awesome night time thing to do haha, its actually helped strengthen my shoulder injury!
JC - I was gonna ask you what the best brand of flaming glow sticks was...but maybe I’ll ask you which type of rocks you prefer skipping instead HA!
MH - hahaha, flattest rocks!

JC - Ok where are you from

MH - I’m from the Murdermitten, Brighton Michigan

JC - murder mitten...cool...so for those that don’t know, can you kind of explain how you’ve come up over the past few years like where you rode and how you’ve ended up on the Rome team
MH - I started riding at resort in my hometown, that calls itself Mt Brighton. I met a ton of people through contests and whatnot around the mitten and snowboarding was my daily routine. Peter Harvieux, midwest rep scoped me out and I grew to be part of the Rome SDS regional team. I think the first time I met most of the Rome crew was out at a team shoot I got invited to in CO. It was so much fun to do some filming with everyone. The last couple years, I’ve been working on some video projects with Syndicate, a midwest film and Peep Show, an all girls flick. I stepped up to a lot of new challenges and rode at so many new mountains along the west coast. So sick! I just kept my head up and took on any new challenges, and I guess that’s how I ended up where I am now!
JC - shaweet, why do you think so many sick shralpers come from the midwest
MH - There are a couple reasons I suppose..... we have so many tow ropes at each resort. Its the best to lap with friends and play games of snow or just shred for hours without unstrapping. Its pretty easy to meet people on snow because there isn’t as much mountain to cover, shredding homies get real tight and its easier to travel more or go on rad trips together. People are just down to have a good time

JC - You’ve been involved pretty heavily as a regional rider in our Local GNAR contests how important do you think local crews are like yours to snowboarding and what are your thoughts on that contest

MH - being part of a crew is the best part of snowboarding, but getting along with multiple crews is even better! I think crews of homies are so important to snowboarding because they push one another, not only on improving, but push new ideas or motivations out of each person. the Local GNAR contest is the perfect way to get everyone motivated and get their brains-a-thinkin. I had a lot of fun with my friends filming and being part of that contest.

JC - were you aware that the other team guys were calling you Little Marie, OM for other Marie or the new one was MJ for Marie jr.......what do you think of that

MH - I’m down with nicknames, and my middle name starts with a J, so sure, they can call me MJ! One of the peepshow filmers always called me Hucalberry, I like that one.

JC - Yeah that’s a good one too...Mj is pretty cool you know cause there’s always the whole Jordan or Jackson thing too...So how was Team Shoot Out, you subbed in last minute for MFR after she got hurt

MH - The shoot out was wild! And, with my luck, I cracked a rib the day before we started, for the first time. My shoulder was all messed up from earlier this season, so I wasn’t feeling so hot. Some of the features were right in my zone, but others, its almost a good thing I was hurt because I probably would have regretted hitting them in the end. I think by the end of the week I made it to the doctor 3 times? haha better safe the sorry

JC - yeah we went to the hospital a lot that week unfortunately. Who impressed you the most out there and was it more or less work than you expected

MH - I’d say Paxson’s big dog status impressed me the most. That boy can handle some rough riding. I was extremely impressed by the park crew too. It was about as much work as I thought it would be

JC - Ha ha ha yeah what was he saying to Larry “If you can’t run with the Big Dog than stay on the porch” HA HA HA one thing that impressed me about you there is that you handled pressure pretty well you always seemed to be happy even when I knew you were hurt, was it all just a good act? Were you nervous?

MH - yeah that was Big Dog talking to Little Chihuaua haha. I think I typically handle pressure well, I grew a decent pain tolerance this year. There’s no point in stressing over the stuff you can’t fix right away, so its better to just get used to it for the meantime. I’m not a very good actor haha. Truthfully I don’t think I was nervous at all, maybe dropping in a couple times, but other than that I felt really comfortable with the crew and everything going on. I had a blast!

JC - Didn’t you have a sketchy story about getting sick or something on a rail trip in Canada

MH - I had a seriously sketchy strep throat sickness when I went on a Peep Show trip to Ottawa. I was pumped on spots when we got there but everything went downhill for me... I couldn’t get outside to shred, I had to wait 4 hours a couple times at the Canadian health care clinics. I couldn’t drink water or eat anything at one point and I thought I was going to stop breathing one night. It was so scary. Everyone on the trip was injured and we had to send some people on a train into town just to get some more shots. I think I finished a whole honey bear in a week and a half.

JC - Damn that sucks there is nothing worse than getting sick on the road ok I’m gonna shoot some words at you rapid fire and I want you to give me the first thing that pops in your head, you ready?

MH - haha all righty

JC - Are you ready to film with the guys for a part in THE SHRED REMAINS

MH - I sure am!! I always hoped to be part of a Rome video, now’s my chance, and I think it’s gonna be a terrific time!

JC - People always seem to bring it up or ask the question about MFR filming with us like it’s some big deal or different thing, We’ve never treated her any different than anyone else. I think we did a similar thing with you at Team Shoot Out and I’ve seen you filming with guys quite a bit, is it different at all filming with guys as opposed to filming with girls

MH - There’s really not much of a difference, and I don’t have a preference between the two. Filming with girls is the best for challenging each other, but we have to risk a lot more to find our own way of getting the job done. Filming with the dudes is a good way for me to push myself, but I sometime find myself in terrifying situations. It’s my favorite way to progress. Plus, the guys take good care and look out for me on the road.

JC - Alright thanks for doing this, we all want you to know we are super stoked to have you part of the crew and we couldn’t be more happy to have you on board

MH - Well thanks guys! I’m super hyped to be part of the team
